InCommon’s Community Architecture Committee for Trust and Identity (CACTI) will host “Extending IAM to the Cloud: It’s Still Your Program” as part of IAM Online on Wednesday, Nov. 16 at 1 p.m. ET with speakers Margaret Cullen, president and CEO, Painless Security, and Kevin Hickey, director of information security, University of Detroit Mercy.

Current CACTI Chair Rob Carter, a consultant at Duke University, will moderate this important community discussion on extending IAM to the cloud. “CACTI has been tracking the trend in research and education IAM programs toward taking greater advantage of cloud-based offerings,” Carter said. “While there are a lot of advantages to including cloud services in your IAM program’s portfolio, we’ve received feedback from a number of organizations indicating that their expectations when incorporating cloud services into their IAM environments haven’t always aligned with the realities they’ve encountered.”
Carter attributes this misalignment of expectations in part to differences between the needs of R&E organizations with respect to IAM and the needs of other verticals working with cloud providers. “Part of it, we expect, arises from misunderstandings around the division of labor and responsibility between cloud customers and cloud providers in the IAM space, which run the spectrum from moving your services to run in, e.g., GoogleCompute or AWS or Azure to renting instances of commercial IAM software from Microsoft, Okta, or Fisher, etc.,” he explained.
According to Carter, CACTI hopes to start a deeper conversation with the community about the role of cloud services in their various IAM programs and bring some clarity to the shared responsibility that cloud integration entails. That conversation begins with IAM Online, “Extending IAM to the Cloud: It’s Still Your Program,” on November 16 at 1 p.m. ET with insights from speakers Margaret Cullen, president and CEO, Painless Security, and Kevin Hickey, director of information security, University of Detroit Mercy.
“Cloud services are already a part of almost all of our IAM environments (whether we realize it or not) — we want to take a closer look at how that changes (and in some cases, expands) the organizational capabilities required to operate a successful IAM program,” Carter said, “and engage the community in an ongoing discussion about how we can help ourselves and each other make the best use of cloud offerings in IAM.”
