Scott Cantor has presented at Internet2’s Technology Exchange (TechEX) more times than he can count.
Scott will be co-presenting at this year’s conference in Minneapolis, September 18–22, along with Judith Bush from OCLC and Gary Windham from Cirrus Identity. Register now.
Their session, “Browser Privacy: Benefit or Threat,” will discuss the privacy-enhancing changes in progress in browsers: The outcome is far from certain. The REFEDS’ Browser Changes working group has been working with the W3C Federation ID Community Group in hopes that research and education federated authentication use cases continue to be supported as browsers fight tracking.
Scott is a senior systems developer for digital security and trust at The Ohio State University (OSU). In addition to his work at OSU, Scott has made significant contributions to the Internet2 community. His involvement includes both the Internet2 consortium Middleware initiative and the Shibboleth project. We asked Scott to give attendees some insight into his upcoming session at TechEX.
Q: What do you hope attendees will learn from your session?
A: Proposed and implemented changes to browsers potentially threaten essentially most, if not all, existing SSO deployments. This session is about what we know, what we don’t know, and the scarce resources we have been actively expending as a community to get ahead of the situation.
Q: Why is this an important topic to cover?
A: All of us will be impacted as a community if the browsers with dominant market share decide to break SAML and OpenID in their current form.

Best IAM Advice He Ever Received (& from whom): It’s not IAM-specific, and I don’t recall where I first saw it, but my best advice was, “There’s no limit to what you can accomplish if you don’t care who gets the credit.” I believe I saw the quote from somebody in our community, so they probably know who they are.
Q: What do you enjoy most about speaking on IAM topics?
A: I always find TechEX and our community to be a receptive audience. I usually learn a lot from the conversations that take place before and after my sessions.
Q: What’s the #1 reason IAM professionals should come to TechEX/CAMP Week 2023?
A: it is much more substantive than most conferences and less oriented around sponsoring companies making sales pitches. The combination of formal sessions and the unconference portion makes for a valuable experience.
