Grady Bailey, a team lead and senior software engineer at the University of Texas at Austin, will dive into the fundamentals of identity and access management (IAM) as part of the InCommon IAM Online series. Please join us on May 15 at 1 p.m. ET for Grady’s webinar, “IAM 101.”
During this webinar, Grady will cover the basics of understanding identity and access management (IAM) in the world of research and higher education. Grady will touch on core principles, best practices, and the essential functions of IAM programs on campuses.
This webinar will also serve as a preview of InCommon BaseCAMP 2024, held virtually June 3-7. BaseCAMP introduces newcomers to the world of IAM while reinforcing IAM principles for seasoned professionals. The virtual event is InCommon’s largest, welcoming over 100 attendees from institutions across the world annually. Grady is a past attendee and presenter of BaseCAMP and now serves as a BaseCAMP planning committee member.
Here is a preview of the insights and expertise that attendees can expect to learn from Grady during the May 15 IAM Online webinar.
Q&A SECTION
What are some topics or key concepts that you believe are important for those new to the IAM field to understand?
I think the most important concepts to have a basic understanding of when you first start working in IAM are authentication, authorization, provisioning, and a rough idea of what an identity life cycle is—and what that looks like.
What advice would you offer to your peers about navigating the IAM landscape?
Use your peers! There is a massive community of people working in IAM in higher education who have likely experienced exactly whatever you might be struggling with. The IAM landscape is vast and complex, but there are so many people who have been working in and around it for decades who are always willing to help!
Best IAM Advice You Have Ever Received
It actually comes from the show “Parks and Recreation” and Nick Offerman’s character Ron Swanson: “You choose a thankless job, you can’t be upset when nobody thanks you.”
I always find that relevant to IAM (and most IT roles in general) because we do things that people see and experience every day, but they will hardly ever consider the people behind the scenes making it all work—unless something goes wrong!
Why did you volunteer to be a member of this year’s InCommon BaseCAMP planning committee?
I see the InCommon community as the single most important resource for someone working in IAM in higher education, and BaseCAMP is the best entry point. I want to do everything I can to ensure that this on-ramp into the wider world of higher education IAM is the best it can be.
What do you hope attendees will learn from your presentation?
I hope everyone gets a taste of what awaits them at InCommon BaseCAMP this year and decides to join us in June! While I do hope to touch on a bit of everything related to IAM in higher education, the real learning will happen at BaseCAMP and beyond.
